It has a learning curve, which makes it seem less fantastic than it really is when you first start using it, and it can be painful to configure for some games, taking hours to get to a point where the configuration feels right, but with some practice and patience, you should have an absolute blast with it, both on your PC and on your couch, for both modern and old titles across a large range of genres. I would highly recommend this controller. It's fascinating that a device from 2016 can play a game from 1993 so seamlessly and easily, feeling almost like the game was designed for the controller. I have not tried it with the Dosbox version of Doom available on Steam, but I assume it will work admirably based on how it has performed in other old games. I was able to run GZDoom through steam, and the controller works fantastically there. The only real problem is there are no on-screen prompts, or if there are, they reference keyboard keys, but this is a small price to pay. That highlights one of the best parts of the controller - it is extremely customisable and extremely flexible, allowing many games which may not even support controllers at all to feel like they are natively controller-based games.
While it did require a lot of initial set up (there is no existing community one), I was able to get a very nice configuration set up going. Firstly, it's a non-steam game, secondly I was launching it through a launcher program, and thirdly it had no controller support at all, forcing me to emulate a keyboard and mouse. I was expecting it to not be so great for FPS games, since most controllers are garbage for first person shooters.Īnother test was playing Descent: Freespace. I would highly recommend it for all but the most fast-paced competitive FPS games. While I would definitely not play a competitive FPS like CSGO with the controller, it is definitely good enough to reliably play any single-player or coop FPS without missing a beat. Not as good as a keyboard and mouse, as they will always be king, but miles and miles above my 360 controller. Doom initially had some problems, but after setting up the touchpads to my needs, it again performed extremely well. The touchpad performed admirably, although with lock-on targeting it was not really required all that often. This did not require much set up at all either, which was good. Being able to rebind the reverse buttons (the ones on the back) to the X and B keys, made important combat actions much more fluid and easy. It performed extremely well in Dark Souls 3, and in many ways actually outperformed the 360 controller I was using. When I finally got it, I decided to test it with 2 major games - Dark Souls 3, and Doom (2016). I knew everything would ride on the accuracy and precision of the track pads. I bought this because, after looking at it's feature set, it looked really cool.
